Mise-En-Scene

In the 1st episode of cuffs we see the chief giving a speech on the podium. We can tell by the clothing and scene that he is the head policeman. He is standing on a podium so he is tall than everyone else. This is not only so he can project his voice but also because it shows that his is the most important in the room. As well as this he has a professional uniform which include gloves and a chief head hat. Everyone around him has positioned themselves facing towards the podium, hand in front of them and shoulder back.

Earlier on in the episode in one of the first scenes we experience a pursuit policeman trying to sort out a squabble on a naturalist beach. there are two nudists and 5 stag men on the beach.  The nudists seem to be protecting their dignity as all that is between them and everyone else is a towel. The stag men have props and costumes. The props include a human sized play doll, swords and viking helmets. The viking helmets represent strength and power to show that people shouldn't mess with them. Whereas the policeman is wearing a full uniform with all the equipment around his waist for example tasers and handcuffs. This shows us that he wants people to take him seriously and respect him.

EXAM Q5c

At the start of cuffs their is an Arial shot above Brighton out at sea, the camera then sweeps across down to the land as it goes past the pier. This showed us the vast amount of land the police have to cover and what they are working with in Brighton. It reveals the area and what part of Brighton we will be seeing the most. after this shot we hear a voice over which then takes us to the scene where it is coming from. The camera gives us a low angle shot of the head of police to show that he has importance.

Later in the episode we get a close up shot of the younger inexperienced policeman when he is at the time to make a decision on whether to help his partner from an attack. By doing a close up shot it makes us feel for whatever the character is experiencing and feeling for them the most, this also happens if the character gets a lot of screen time. With different camera angles we experience more emotion and see more action than we would if the camera angle was a straight shot every time, this immerses the watcher into the episode, capturing them in their own world.

Exam Q5

Society contexts influence television programs most of the time in 2017.  The type of language defined what the television show is going to show and tell to the audiences. In the Avengers the social context represents the old way of language and how men and women spoke to each other. For example when the Bartender says " could not find quote " This shows us that people gave different names for men and women that we would do in the present age.

This old language is used throughout the episodes as it was a normal language to use in 1961. This is one of the ways that make it to be an older TV show.

The scene of the Avengers TV shows us scenes from different periods before that age for example the old church or the destroyed bunkers from WW 2. This shows us what time period it was set because of they debris and bunkers have not been cleared away like they would have done a longer period after the war. Also the room they were staying in gives us hints of the age as the beds and furniture are antiques to us, there is also a butcher, a baker, and a candlestick maker which they would barely or not be around today.

EXAM Q2

Analyse how far the extract depicts the polices point of view rather than the criminals point of view.[10]

Before we even see the action the voice over tells us that the policemen need courage and conviction to do their job as they can be treated harshly. The voice over also states that they had to have much training to become a policeman, this means it is easier for us to trust them. Whereas the criminals have done nothing and commit crime in the community.

They police man help the criminals as well as stopping them for example when the man in the house was slitting his wrists and the bosses son helped him out of his house. The scenes make us admire the policeman as he tries to diffuse the situation without hurting anyone, He does this by not using physical force until he is pushed by one of the men on the beach. He is then punched in the face by a stag man which makes us have sympathy for him as punching a policeman is a criminal offence. We feel this because it is an unlikely thing to happen as policemen are good in the watchers eyes.

Many people make it hard for the policemen to help them if  they are in a low part in their life as we see outside an urban house in the city, when Nathan has a knife but they talk calmly to him to make Nathan feel better. In scene three we experience seeing a normal Indian kid getting stabbed by a gang in a shop, this shows us what the policeman have to deal with in their everyday situation.

This extract depicts the policeman's view in order to see how much work and time it takes to do what they are doing and we should look up to their work and abilities.

Exam Q1

The sound in the extract is used to create meaning by putting different soundtracks in different parts on the movie depending on what is happening in that particular scene in the movie. For example: In a scene of tension you would use very loud fast music to get the audience on the edge of their seats and also have the volume of the scene increased so people would pay more attention to the present dialogue and background.

Another example of where the soundtrack is used to create meaning by putting soundtracks in different parts of the movie is when they use the footsteps in the Avengers while they were in there room.  This asked us whats out there? does it have any significance to what is going on in the story and will it effect the main characters? this all creates meaning on whats going on in the movie.
