EDITING CUFFS

PREP Analyse how editing is used in the extract from Cuffs to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer. (This means that a good candidate will write fully and freely, covering more than just 2 examples, as we practised in class).
Worth 5 marks: write half a side of A4 and post on your blog tonight. If you have DoE, take an extra 24 hours.

The editing is used in Cuffs to create meaning by using different effects and transitions when a scene changes. This happens when The four policemen are training after their shifts. They start all running from cone to cone and after a few seconds there is a time laps. As they are running they start to fade and then another image of them appears where they are more tired and sweaty. This is used because it speeds up time instead of watching them run for a long time.

A second piece of editing used in cuffs to create a meaning is when they are at Nathan's house and they are peeking through the mailbox. In this scene they use a lot of shot/reverse shot. These shots are mainly up close shots to show the emotion of the people. Nathan is very scared and curled up on the floor as we see on the opening camera angle that shows the whole room. This is done because it makes you more in touch with the character

    1. You understand the edit in your first example but do not identify it as a cross dissolve transition. Also, the EAA needs improving: Jake has been invited in this scene to train with the team as he has proved his worth by saving Ryan from an attack. Up to this point, he had been treated as an outsider because he was considered privileged as the Super's son. Here, the long, hard and dedicated training session demonstrates the team's high standards. Time lapse compresses thae session.
    2. You are nearly there but you should identify the people by name and, most importantly, state WHAT emotions are made visible in the shot /reverse shot sequence.
