David Bowie Magazine

This magazine made by Mojo Has the name at the very top of the magazine in the largest most capitalistic letters than its comparisons. The title is hidden by the top of David Bowie's head, this is because the magazine brand believe that people recognize there logo much so that they can place half of it behind David Bowie. In the middle of the magazine is placed the surname of David as that is what people know him best by. It is also to show what the magazines main theme is about as we see in the sub header "The Berlin years, untold and unseen". This introduces us to what the writing about David is. The large picture of David in the center blends in with the background but as it is the only main picture on the front it forces us to look at it.

All around the edges of the Magazine front cover there are large and small square boxes that either hold images or information. In the top left hand corner there is a square that says "free CD". As a reader/ costumer we always like a free deal and this sign clearly states there is one in this magazine by contrasting the colours of the rest of the magazine. As well as all these boxes there are also circles and shapes that introduce us to new information about the magazine or any deals within it. For example on the right side of the magazine there is another contrast in colours stating this issue has had good reviews showing that many people liked it.

There is little space left on the magazine as most of it is taken up by the picture and the writing surrounding it. The proportion is mapped out perfectly as we can see everything when looking directly at it. The Large square at the bottom left corner does stand out a little bit but is probably edited that way so it is more eye catching for the costumer. Most of the writing is in capitals and stands out from the background. The magazine cover is cropped perfectly so the edges do not bleed over the sides. The blue image that takes up over a quarter of the page represents David Bowie's move to Germany where he was unknown by everyone. This is why it is represented as a new decade in German. It also has an image that makes us think we are going to learn about Bowie's off-road trip to peace.

All around the edges are  four decks and three decks that have been neatly placed in whit and black. These decks also give us information about the information in the magazine and give us an idea about what we will be reading. Most on the decks also contain funny or strong, leading quotes that make us what to read more about it.

SK8TER BOI

1.               Performance - the singer / band are seen to be playing, to provide authenticity, so that followers believe in the talent and can see their star. Record labels sign stars and promote them to ensure sales. Avril Lavigne sings throughout the video using a mike and draws a huge crown of fans around her when she jumps onto a car roof in the street. She sings with great passion, energy and conviction. Holding the mike close to her mouth. Close ups show her every word lip syncing is a feature of a music video. She performs for her fans and for her boyfriend, the skater boi who features in the narrative. Screens often feature in music videos and the skater boi is videoing Avril lavigne as he gazes adoringly up to her.
2.                Star - use of close-ups, sometimes direct eye contact with audience, to build relationship with audience. The main star of the Music video is Avril lavigne and we see he multiple time staring at the camera. She does this so she can make contact with the audience, this makes the audience feel like she is singing to them. We also see Avril Lavigne getting her face exceptionally close to the camera as she is focusing on singing to it. This also makes contact with the audience as we feel like she is singing for no one else but simply putting on a show for us to watch and listen to.
3.                The visuals (what the star and other characters are seen doing) illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics (the 'story in the words'). Illustration = the visuals play out the story more or less literally; amplify = the words in the lyrics are only the starting point and the story develops in other directions; contradiction / disjuncture = the visuals do not interpret the words of the lyrics and may even show something contradictory. Avril lavigne uses the lyrics to set out what the music video is going to look like and give the impression of. As the audience watches we see her on top of a car and everyone dancing around her. She then singles out her boyfriend and sings the main Chorus in which the lyrics say "He’s just a boy, and I’m just a girl". This is what’s happening in the lyrics but she is the famous one and the boy has come to her 'concert' which makes us think about what’s happening.
4.               The narrative usually features the performer in 'real life' situations but often with experimental types of film making such as hand-held, dramatic camera angles, symbolic codes and lighting. Avril lavigne
5.               The visuals are usually cut to the beat of the music; the editing is often fast-paced; there is often use of montage, ellipsis and intercutting, stylish effects
6.               Refrain - repeated chorus, sometimes with variations
7.               Intertextuality - references to other media, films, performances, events

EDITING CUFFS

PREP Analyse how editing is used in the extract from Cuffs to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer. (This means that a good candidate will write fully and freely, covering more than just 2 examples, as we practised in class).
Worth 5 marks: write half a side of A4 and post on your blog tonight. If you have DoE, take an extra 24 hours.

The editing is used in Cuffs to create meaning by using different effects and transitions when a scene changes. This happens when The four policemen are training after their shifts. They start all running from cone to cone and after a few seconds there is a time laps. As they are running they start to fade and then another image of them appears where they are more tired and sweaty. This is used because it speeds up time instead of watching them run for a long time.

A second piece of editing used in cuffs to create a meaning is when they are at Nathan's house and they are peeking through the mailbox. In this scene they use a lot of shot/reverse shot. These shots are mainly up close shots to show the emotion of the people. Nathan is very scared and curled up on the floor as we see on the opening camera angle that shows the whole room. This is done because it makes you more in touch with the character

Question 1, 5 Marker

In the extract, Mis-en-sen is constantly used as we can see from the setting. the setting is layed out as a low class house, reasonably smal...
