How far does the extract try to create a sense that it is portraying 'real life'?

  • In your answer you should: analyse aspects of the extract giving detailed examples
  • judge how far these aspects create a sense of watching 'real life'
In the extract given, It is entirely based to give a sense of realism to what the viewers are watching. Firstly, the location the scene is set is a very realistic scene as it is full of people and many things you would experience in real life. As they are using a shopping center, this also can relate to the viewers as it is somewhere they might go regularly. The natural lighting and average behavior of people also gives a sense of realism to the scene. If the scene was set in a place where people weren't acting normal in an unusual place people would quickly get bored as they would not connect and feel whats going on in the scene. As well as this, the use of the generic conventions code spreads the use of different types of people across the scene equally. Also the use of different anti stereotypes which creates a feeling of connection across the audience as they would all be able to relate. As shown, Jake the new police officer is gay. This opens up to people who may be watching and believe because they are different they cant do something. The use of a different range of people contradicts that idea and shows that anyone can be what they want.

In addition to this the criminals robbing the shop are stereotyped as men barbecue they are generally related to more violence and strength. This would add to the normality of the scene as the watchers would see what they are used to hearing about and what fits their normal stereotype. Another use of the Anti stereotypes is when the female policewoman is wearing a headscarf. This levels out the racial  diversity so it is varied in and out the scenes. This gives an all-around view of the series showing everyone is equal in out society nowadays.

In the beginning scene many people will not be able to relate to this as they have not witnessed a robbery in progress but as the scene carries on the tension of what is happening through the loud sounds and fast cuts gives the audience a sense of adrenaline and fear, this lets them relate to the policemen in the car chase as they are probably feeling the same emotions. This lets us see and experience what it feels to be put in a policeman's shoes in an everyday situation for them. This enhances the sense of realism for the audience.

In the scenes the  actors also play their scenes very realistically. The acting in the scenes display the emotions very convincingly. This evidently increases the realism largely enhancing how the audience members feel while watching the episode.

Question 2 Cuffs

Analyze how far the extract depicts the police's point of view rather than the criminals' point of view. In your answer you should:
  • Analyze aspects of the extract using examples to support your analysis.
  • Judge how far these aspects depict the polices point of view.
The extract depicts the polices view quite largely as we are supposed to take the polices view and what they are dealing with in the episodes. We can see this in the part of the police chase. The watchers barely see the criminal van in the chase but there are regular images of policemen in car chasing them. This can change the watchers point of view because the police have a large amount of screen time as the story is based through their eyes. This makes the readers feel for the police if something happens and tend to take their side within the episodes.

Close ups of the police officers can also help readers take the place of the polices point of view. This is because when there is a close up on them, we see the emotions portrayed on their faces and how they are feeling in that moment. This can trigger the watchers emotions which most likely relate to what the character is feeling.

In conclusion these aspects depict the polices point of view big enough to get sympathy from the audience and to constantly be on there side in the situations they face. This really pulls the audience in as they have people to relate to and confide in, connecting to Blumer and Katz's concept.

Question 1 Cuffs

Analyze how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer.

Sound in the extract is used to create meaning by amplifying different sounds in certain scenes depending on whats going on in them. for example in the police chase when following the van the sound would be very loud. The music in the background would be very fast paced. This makes the watcher feel part of the moment and absorbed with the action taking place.

Another relevance to sound in the action scene is the loud siren of the police car. The siren is heard because it creates a sense of urgency as you would feel if you heard a police siren in real life. The heightened sound of the siren also raises the watchers heartbeat making the scene more intense.
